The City of Light… The City of Seven Hills
Lisbon is a city that simply begs to be photographed. From the sun-bleached facades of Alfama to the sweeping viewpoints of the Miradouros, every corner offers a new story waiting to be told. This immersive photography workshop is your opportunity to explore one of Europe’s most visually rich capitals, camera in hand and an expert photo guide by your side.
Why a Photo Tour of Lisbon?
Few cities in the world offer such a diverse and rewarding range of photographic subjects within such a compact, walkable area. Lisbon is a place where the ancient and the modern coexist beautifully, where crumbling baroque architecture stands alongside striking contemporary design, and where daily life plays out in the open, on steep cobbled streets, in bustling market squares, and along a glittering Atlantic waterfront.
The light here is something special. Portugal’s famous golden light bathes the city for much of the year, casting long, warm shadows in the early morning and setting the terracotta rooftops ablaze at dusk. Photographers who know, come here for the light alone. Add to that a richly layered culture, a warm and welcoming population, and an endlessly varied urban landscape, and you have one of the finest photography destinations in Europe.
Street Photography in Lisbon
Learn to work fluidly in busy public spaces, anticipate moments before they happen, and develop the quiet confidence that great street photography demands. We will explore the Baixa, the Mouraria, and the winding lanes of Alfama, some of the city’s most characterful and historically rich districts.
Lisbon’s residents are warm, proud, and often wonderfully characterful. We will cover techniques for approaching strangers respectfully, building quick rapport, and capturing genuine, unposed portraits that tell a real human story. From market traders to elderly locals sitting in the afternoon sun, the city is full of compelling faces.
Hunting vs fishing: In Lisbon, you will have the opportunity to practise both. Some locations will draw you in as you wander, demanding a quick reaction. Others will stop you in your tracks and ask you to stay a while. Learning to read the difference is one of the most rewarding skills a street photographer can develop.
From Trams to Local Colour
The devil is in the detail, and Lisbon is full of it. Intricate azulejo tile panels, hand-lettered shop signs, fishing nets drying by the river, strings of laundry between balconies. We will train your eye to seek out the telling details that bring a place to life in a single frame.
Lisbon’s vintage yellow trams are among the most photographed subjects in the city, and for good reason. We will show you how to move beyond the obvious shot and find fresh, creative angles, working with motion, light, and the surrounding street to create images that feel alive rather than merely documentary.
Architecture: Old and New
From the ornate Manueline stonework of the Jeronimos Monastery to the clean geometric lines of the MAAT museum on the waterfront, Lisbon offers a genuine feast for architectural photography. We will cover compositional techniques, working with wide angles, and how to use the city’s dramatic light and topography to your advantage. Sunset at the Vasco da Gama Bridge is always a pleasure for long exposure.
Viewpoints and Landscapes
Lisbon is a city of hills, and its many Miradouros offer sweeping views across terracotta rooftops and down to the wide Tagus estuary. We will visit several of the best vantage points at different times of day, learning how to work with changing light, manage high-contrast scenes, and compose a cityscape that has genuine depth and atmosphere.
Who is this Lisbon Photo Workshop for?
This workshop welcomes photographers of all levels, from enthusiastic beginners who have recently moved off automatic mode to more experienced shooters looking to challenge themselves in a new environment. Our tutors adapt their guidance to suit each participant, so you will never feel left behind or unchallenged.
You do not need expensive equipment. A mirrorless or DSLR camera with a standard zoom lens is perfectly sufficient, and much of what we discuss applies equally to compact cameras and even smartphones. What matters far more than your kit is your curiosity, your willingness to slow down and observe, and your desire to improve.
Come and See Lisbon Through a Different Lens
Whether you leave with a single image that stops you in your tracks or an entire portfolio you are proud to share, this workshop will change the way you see and photograph the world around you. Lisbon is a city that gives generously to those who take the time to look. We would love to help you look a little closer.
ststPractical Details
The workshop runs over three days and is based in central Lisbon, with all shoot locations within easy reach on foot or by public transport. Group sizes are capped at six participants to ensure a genuinely personal experience.
All skill levels are welcome. Places are limited and tend to fill quickly, so early booking is strongly advised.
We recommend arriving in Lisbon on 31st March 2027, giving you a chance to settle in and get your bearings before we begin. The workshop officially starts on the morning of 1st April and runs through to the evening of 3rd April, with departures on 4th April. Of course, Lisbon is a city worth lingering in, and you are more than welcome to extend your stay!
End of workshop photo review and editing session
On the last afternoon or evening of the trip we often have a photo review. Everyone brings around 4 or 5 edited images to show the group. We can then offer joint feed back and editing advice. I appreciate not everyone may bring laptops for editing, so SOOC images are also fine.
Also included is a one hour online session with every guest to help with image selection and editing.
Access to Private Members Facebook Community group
We also have a private Facebook group where members can join and post images for feedback and I answer questions and give help and advice.
Your hotel in Lisbon
Our comfortable 3 star hotel in the centre of Lisbon is close to many of our shoot locations and also close to public transport. We have not included breakfast at the hotel as we may often be out shooting during breakfast so we will find breakfast and this is reflected in the workshop cost. The hotel has free wifi as well as a resturant.
