Why landscape photography in Tuscany?

Tuscany offers a rich tapestry of photo opportunities, blending stunning landscapes, historic architecture, and vibrant local culture. The undulating hills, particularly in Val d'Orcia, are characterised by their cypress-lined roads, golden fields, lush green meadows adorned with bright red poppies, and vineyards. These landscapes change dramatically with the seasons, offering different colors and moods for photography.

From our base in San Quirico we will explore in many directions, capturing the best of the region. I have been exploring this region of Tuscany for many years and know many little known locations as well as the popular iconic spots.

The Val d’Orcia Valley is an UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the most famous areas for capturing misty landscapes.

Stunning Tuscan landscapes ripe for our cameras

Against the backdrop of patchwork poppy strewn fields, avenues of Cypress trees, and dappled sunlight dancing across the undulating terrain, every moment offers a picturesque scene waiting to be immortalised through our lenses.

Our exploration extends beyond the Val d’Orcia, venturing into neighboring villages and historic towns like Montepulciano, as well as the medieval hill towns of Pitigliano and Sorano. With days stretching from dawn till dusk, we seize every moment to harness the optimal light, crafting our itinerary dynamically based on the ever-changing weather and lighting conditions. This journey is not just about photographing locations but about embracing the essence of Tuscany and capturing its timeless beauty through the lens of our cameras.

Amazing sunsets and sunrises in Tuscany

The golden hour in Tuscany is magical. The soft light at dawn and dusk bathes the landscape in warm tones, perfect for capturing the essence of the region. The rolling hills produce wonderful textures, shapes and contours as the sun moves across the landscape.

Spring in Tuscany presents an enchanting opportunity for photographers to capture the splendour of the landscape. With warm, dry days and cool nights that blanket the valleys in morning mist, the setting becomes a canvas for breath-taking sunrises and sunsets.

Tuscan Gastronomy & Wine Tour

We will also visit the vineyard at Catina di Montalcino where you can sample several of their wines plus some local foods, immersing yourself in the flavors of Montalcino. This is included in the trip cost. The surrounding area is also a beautiful landscape of rolling hills covered with over 500 hectars of vines.

In San Quirico we visit some more wine cellars as well as taste selections of Tuscany’s famous olive oils and basamic vinegars. Plus over time I have developed a list of amazing resturants to make this photography trip a treat for all the senses.

Lush meadows adorned with vibrant Poppies

Poppies in Tuscany are a vivid and enchanting sight, particularly in spring when the landscape is often  dotted with vibrant red blooms. These fields of poppies add a burst of colour to the rolling hills and vineyards, creating a stunning contrast with the green and golden hues of the Tuscan landscape.

Photographing poppies in Tuscany offers a chance to capture one of the region's most colourful and dynamic natural displays. Whether you're focusing on expansive fields of red or intimate close-ups of the flowers, the poppies provide a beautiful and quintessentially Tuscan subject for photography.

In addition we will also find hill sides covered in purple French Honeysuckle.

Amazing mist covered Tuscan valleys

The mist in the valleys of Tuscany is a captivating sight that adds an ethereal dreamlike quality to the landscape. This phenomenon is most commonly observed during the early mornings, moreso in the spring months.

The mist often blankets the valleys, with only the hill tops, cypress trees, and ancient farmhouses peeking through. The mist diffuses the early morning light, softening the colors and creating a serene, pastel-like palette. This light is perfect for capturing the delicate beauty of the Tuscan countryside.

Wonderful hill top villages

Tuscany is renowned for its charming small villages, each offering a unique glimpse into the region's rich history, culture, and stunning landscapes. These villages often boast medieval architecture, picturesque streets, and breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. All Tuscan towns and villages will feature many wonderful details to photograph such as doors, windows, letterboxes, flowers, unsual shop front, wells and many other uniquely Tuscan delights.

Tuscany photography locations

Our locations over the trip can include: Pienza, Monticello, Montalcino, Montepulciano, Belvedere, Lucignano, Cappella Vitaleta, Casciano, Poggio Corvili, Terra Pilla, Sorano, Pitigliano, Abbeys of St Antimo and Monte Oliveto Maggiore, La Foce, Val Di Chianna and many more.

Tuscany Photo Locations – Workshop Approach

Before getting our cameras out, we will look at how the landscape presents itself, how the light sits and where it may move and change. Then we’ll consider the best framing and how to experiment with different ideas and view points, picking out small or different elements of the landscape and using them to best effect. We are on hand at all times to offer help and advice about composition and technique to help you get the very best from every location.

There will be occasional downtime during the day with the flexibility to either do your own thing, or discuss image critique, editing and feedback.

Our trips are structured for photographers of all photo abilities; For those that are beginners or want additional help, we provide assistance, evaluation and guidance throughout from an experienced landscape and travel photographer. For experienced photographers, you have the benefit of joining a photo workshop with a guide with excellent local knowledge. We want photographers of all abilities to leave the workshop with an amazing array of quality images to be proud of.

Transport during the workshop is in a comfortable air-conditioned minibus/people carrier.

End of workshop photo review and editing session

On the last afternoon or evening of the trip we will have a photo review. Everyone brings around 4 or 5 edited images to show the group. We can then offer joint feed back and editing advice. I appreciate not everyone may bring laptops for editing, so SOOC images are also fine.

Also included is a one hour online session with every guest to help with image selection and editing.

Access to Private Members Facebook Community group

We also have a private Facebook group where members can join and post images for feedback and I answer questions and give help and advice.

Tuscany Photography Workshop Schedule

Participants need to arrive into Pisa airport on 01/05/2027 by approx. 13.00. From here we will drive to the hotel via a few picturesque locations, arriving around 19.00. Returning to Pisa on 08/05/2027 we will arrive by approx 13.00.

The daily schedule is not fixed and each day will flex depending upon weather and local conditions/accessibility.

Honest small print about mist and poppies: Please note that photography opportunities featuring misty valleys and poppy fields cannot be guaranteed, as both are entirely natural phenomena. Morning mist is weather-dependent, varying with temperature and humidity, while poppy blooms typically occur between late April and early June, with timing and density changing year to year based on rainfall and agricultural activity.

Tuscany Photography Tour Reviews

We believe the best photography tours are about more than just taking pictures - they’re about creating experiences you’ll treasure forever. That’s why we go the extra mile in everything we do. We scout the most breathtaking locations at the perfect time of year, so you’re always in the right place at the right moment. We seek out great local restaurants where you can savour authentic local flavours, and we weave in cultural experiences - like wine and olive oil tastings - that bring you closer to the heart of the region.

But perhaps the best way to understand what makes our tours special is through the words of those who’ve already joined us. Many of our guests have shared great 5-star reviews, and a selection from this very tour can be found here.

The Tuscany workshop is spectacular. Steven took care to ensure that the tour was tailored according to the conditions, so that we got the shots we came for. Small group with a great friendly vibe, everyone was looked after regardless of their skill and experience. Thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended.

Good Tuscany Tour Attended a photography tour in Tuscany with Steven Gosling in the spring, and it was a fantastic experience. We explored many beautiful villages and captured some truly stunning sunrise scenes. We had 2 rainy days but tour was well-organised, and Steven was a knowledgeable and supportive guide throughout. On one of the rainy days we had a few hours editing photos which was a bonus. One of the highlights was the lovely wine tour, which added a great local flavour to the trip. The group was small, friendly and fun, making the whole experience even more enjoyable. I highly recommend Steven’s tours to anyone looking to improve their photography while enjoying amazing locations!

A Top-Tier Workshop Experience in Tuscany As a Canadian photographer based in the U.S. (I know!!!) it takes something truly special for me to head over to Europe for a workshop. I also run my own photo workshops here in the States, so I have high standards, and Steve's workshop in Tuscany absolutely delivered. After researching several different tour providers, I came across Steve and reached out with a long list of questions. He responded quickly and thoroughly, which gave me the confidence to book right away. This workshop was part of a larger European trip I had planned, and I’m so glad I made it part of the journey. From day one, it was clear that Steve puts his heart into every aspect of the tour. If the weather didn’t cooperate, he went above and beyond to find alternative locations with great shooting potential. His instruction was excellent... insightful, hands-on, and practical. Even as an experienced photographer, I came away having learned a few new things. I’ve already signed up for another trip with Steve next year, and I’m looking forward to it.

Tuscany 11-18May 2024: I’m late in writing my review This was my second trip with Steven Gosling from Creative Photo Adventures. And my second trip to Tuscany. I had previously been on a workshop with someone else during the Autumn season a few years earlier. What a difference a season makes. From the moment Steve collected us all, the great times started. En route from the airport to our accommodation for the week, Steve knows of some great spots to stop for shots. Always keep your camera gear easily accessible. His knowledge of the area is unparalleled. Steve works hard, ensuring that everyone gets the best shots they can. He’ll guide you on composition, making suggestions on how you could capture the scene from a different perspective, always putting the client first. If the conditions weren’t perfect, he took us to other locations. He even goes as far as to drive and hunt out the elusive mist or search for a Poppy field; he manages to find the ideal vantage point to capture great images. What I like about Steve’s trip is that, although it's predominantly a Landscape trip, he also included some beautiful hilltop Towns and villages, as well as urban photography. Plus some little extras. Tuscany workshops mean early starts and long days; We were out before dawn to capture the wonderful light, and hopefully the elusive mist. We would return to the hotel for a hearty breakfast, recharge and go back out again. He will never have you trying to capture the landscape in harsh light. The accommodation for this trip is in an excellent location for exploring the countryside and Towns. The transport Steve provides is comfortable. Steve is a great diver. If you're looking to learn more about photography, explore the stunning Tuscan countryside, and see Iconic locations, this trip is perfect for you. If you're an experienced photographer seeking unique images, this trip is ideal for you. Steve has a high return customer rate, which I think speaks volumes. This was another marvellous trip, with lasting memories of stunning locations, laughter, great food, and friendships made, along with some excellent images taken. Some of my pictures have even been published in an International Photography Magazine

Excellent Tuscany Photo Tour I booked on the Tuscany photography tour last year in Spring. Organisation was great, Steve has excellent knowledge of the locations. We had a few rainy days but Steve has a few plan B's plus we had some editing sessions. I had researched with different tour providers and Steve's was the cheapest which I wondered if it would be any good, but Steve really put everything into making it a great trip and included a wonderful tour of a vineyard with wine tasting. Upon returning home and editing my photos I had a one to one session and he helped me edit some and improved my edit skills. I've been on a few workshops and no-one ever has sessions after the trip. Steve is highly recommended.
